Flea Treatment London

Flea infestations are one of the most common pest problems for London pet owners and are far more widespread than many people realise. Cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) — the species most often found in UK homes regardless of whether cats are present — can rapidly infest carpets, upholstered furniture, and bedding. A female flea lays up to 50 eggs per day, meaning a small problem can become a major infestation within weeks.

Flea bites cause intense itching in both humans and animals, and fleas can transmit tapeworms to pets and, in rare cases, cause anaemia in heavily infested animals. What makes professional flea treatment necessary — rather than over-the-counter sprays — is the biology of the flea. Only around 5% of the total flea population in an infested home is actually on your pet at any given time. The remaining 95% — eggs, larvae, and pupae — are in your carpets, soft furnishings, and skirting board gaps. Without treating the environment as well as the animal, re-infestation is virtually guaranteed.

Signs You Have a Flea Problem

  • Pet scratching: Excessive scratching, grooming, or biting at skin in cats and dogs, sometimes with visible skin irritation or hair loss at the base of the tail
  • Bites on humans: Small, itchy, red bite marks — typically around ankles and lower legs — often with a reddish halo
  • Flea dirt: Tiny black specks on pet bedding, carpets, or the pet’s coat; place on damp white tissue — if it turns red, it is digested blood from fleas
  • Visual sightings: Small, fast-moving dark insects visible in carpet fibres, on pet bedding, or jumping on light-coloured surfaces
  • Activity in empty properties: Fleas can survive in a vacant property for months in their cocoon stage, often emerging aggressively when vibration from new occupants triggers hatching

Treatment Process

  1. Pre-treatment preparation: We provide full written preparation instructions ahead of the visit. You will need to vacuum all carpets and upholstered furniture, wash pet bedding at 60°C, and treat your pet(s) with a veterinarian-approved flea treatment before our visit. The pet must be treated on or immediately before the treatment day.
  2. Whole-property treatment: Our technician applies a professional-grade residual insecticide to all carpeted areas, skirting boards, upholstered furniture, and pet resting areas. We also apply an insect growth regulator (IGR) to prevent eggs and larvae from developing into biting adults — a critical step that over-the-counter products rarely include.
  3. Follow-up visit: A second treatment 10–14 days later ensures any emerging adults from protected cocoons are also eliminated. Most flea infestations are resolved within 2 visits; persistent cases or multi-room infestations may benefit from a third.
  4. Aftercare guidance: We advise on ongoing prevention — pet flea treatment frequency, vacuuming schedules, and how to avoid re-introduction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my pet need to be treated before you visit? Yes, this is essential. The flea population on your pet is a continuous source of re-infestation. If pets are not treated before or during our visit, the environmental treatment will be undermined. We recommend speaking to your vet about prescription flea products, which are significantly more effective than supermarket treatments.

How long after treatment should I keep off the carpets? We recommend staying off treated floor areas until they have dried — usually 2–4 hours. Children and pets should be kept off treated surfaces during this period. We will give you specific guidance for your property before leaving.

Can I get fleas without having a pet? Yes. Fleas can enter a property from the garden (carried by foxes, hedgehogs, or cats that visit), from a previous occupant’s pet, or from next door in terraced housing. They can survive in a dormant state for many months and “activate” when new occupants arrive.

Why do I still see fleas after treatment? It is normal to see some adult fleas for 2–4 weeks after treatment as the final cocoons hatch and adults emerge into the treated environment. Continue vacuuming regularly to stimulate hatching and speed up the process. If activity persists beyond 4 weeks, contact us — this is covered by our guarantee.
